Twenty denier is where sheer stops. Above this the leg begins to read as a shade rather than as skin, which is what the semi-opaque line is for.

At the calf the leg still reads through clearly. At the thigh, where the same yarn is stretched further over a wider circumference, it begins to mute.

Snagging

At 20D the yarn is fine and catches easily on rings, nails and rough seating. A tighter knit at 70D resists snagging better than at 20D, but no tights are snag-proof.
